I just bought a 40GB lacie studio drive. It's an external firewire disk and I wonder how is the proper way to shut it off.I throw the partitions to the trashcan and then I turn the switch to off on the firewire case.I now this is the proper way but in case I'm missing something I would like to hear it from you.
I bought it from my own money so I'm extra scared with this thing...

The way you're doing it is the standard method to park all volumes under the Mac OS, so you shouldn't have any problems. The machine would alert you with a dialog box if there were a problem with how you were dismounting the drive.

Thanks for you fast reply guys but jenkinson what do you mean by saying that I need to unplug it before I shut it off?? Unplugg it from the firewire port??I hope this isn't necessary cuase it would be quite boring to plug and unplug not to mention that the firewire port would ware out quite easily.

The Port phisicly won't wear out, Think of how many times we have all pluged and unpluged an iPod, I never once unpluged my firewire CDRW always had all of the media ejected and then just truned the switch off, (a LaCie brand).

I GOT WASTED WITH PHIL SHERRY!!!

Maybe jenkinson is rght.I also never unplug my firewire equipment but last night I had the most weird problem of all!!!!
I shutdown the hard disk and also turned off the conputer. The hard disk remained connected with te firewire port and also on the mains. After a while (half ab hour or so) I hear a very loud and strange noise.A very loud hissing. The strange thing is that (I think) that it didn't came from the iMac's speakers but from somewhere inside the iMac...I immediately disconnected the hard disk and the hissing noise stops!!!! WHAT THE F@$% WAS THAT ???????
I reconnected the firewire port and I noticed that the mac was passing(while still off) some power to the hd enough that the 1 of the 2 hd lights remained on.... So I'm thinking is the hd also passing the same power back to the mac and after a while it makes that strange noise because mac has "overloaded"???
I don't know the solution to this thing but I surely need your opinion.

P.S I think that the ports can still pass some power when turned off.I use to connect my iPod from this certain port. One time I connected the iPod to my mac while still off.The iPod starts charging(!!!) but in a weird way.The bars were passing by very very quick. So the port can pass enough power to make the iPod think that the power is enough ro charge.
So now I'm thinking of disconnecting also my external firewire CDRW.Just to be cautious.
