I'm trying to find a nice speaker system with an optical input for under 150 dollars so I can plug my Macbook Pro in and get 5.1 sound over the spdif connector. Does anyone have ideas?

I've not seen any for under $150. Pretty much all of the ones I've seen retail around $300+. Logitech has a set, Z5500 or Z4500 something like that.

Logitech Z5500's and they go for well over $150, even on sale, because their the equivanet of a home theatre system (5.1 speakers + control unit and amp). You'd be hard pressed to find 5.1 speakers that accept optical in for under $150. All the cheap 5.1 speakers are analog and require 3 color-coded cables which you can use only if you buy a soundcard, which will cost you at least $100.

In the same vain of the OPs subject, but not the same question exactly, are there any nice 2.1 digital optical speakers out there for sub-$200, or do you think it would even matter at that point?

I'd also be interested in finding something to use my optical out port on a Mac Pro.
