A month after buying my Studio Display 17 CRT I started seeing the wobbles and shakes. This only happens at 1600x1200 and 1280x1024 (my res of choice) and all other resolutions are fine. I've shipped the monitor off to Apple twice, swapped video cards in my G4 via Apple and the monitor still wobbles and shakes. I've also had my G4 bench tested by hooking it up to a VGA monitor and even an identical Studio Display CRT with the ADC and both worked perfectly - no wobbles or shakes. After the bench testing and several phone calls to Apple I (as well as several Apple techs) have come to the conclusion that my monitor is fried. I was told the monitor could be replaced with a 15 inch Studio Display LCD (too small) or a 17' Mitsubishi (about $150 less than what I paid for my defective Studio Display 17) or I could pay $400 and "trade up" to a 17" LCD Studio Display. The first 2 choices are unacceptable and the latter is too expensive in my opinion. So, what I'm wondering before I send my defective monitor off one more time is this: has anyone had this problem and had their monitor fixed AND been told what the solution was? I feel like if I could specifically point to a problem and say please try looking at "X" before shipping the monitor back I would at least know I've exhausted every option. I really love the form factor and the ADC connection of the Studio Display CRT and it was the perfect price for my budget. I'm extremely frustrated. Today I was actually shouted at by an Apple customer service rep when I complained about how long he kept me on hold (nearly 40 min's - and I have nearly 6 hours of phone time logged because of this problem) and my past lack of productivity and the idea of future lack of productivity due to Apple's defective product.

Someone - anyone - please help!

Hey bro, I know how you feel.

I purchased a new Apple Cinema display, which cost of course $2500!!! As much as their midline machine would..

I have a clump of dead pixels, and over 40 stuck ones around it.. the first time I sent it in they said there was no defect found..

Did yours get sent to Louisiana too?

I'm really upset about it, and again, after waiting on hold for MORE THAN AN HOUR, (from 2:20 to 3:30), i have to send it in again...

Just letting ya know it doesn't seem to matter how much they pay, and bro, I'm hoping I get an exchange here

Ask them to check the raytube itself, or the circuittry to see if it's a busted capacitor, or the transistor won't take the res. It sounds to me as if the system is having electrical problems, thus the problem with high res/refresh rates

A 15 inch Studio Display LCD will give you approx. the same viewable area as a 17 in. CRT display. If it were me I would trade for the LCD.

actually the 15inch display will give you 1 less viewable inch and only up to 1024x768 resolution, and if you're anything like me which i'm sure you are 1280x1024 is how i like to do things.

I wouldn't mind the 17inch LCD though that's a nice screen and it does 1280x1024..

The sad thing to say, however, is the Studio 17 crt can do 1600x1200 (I don't even want to know how you can see that)

The damned stupid monitor can do a higher resolution than my cinema display that cost almost 5 times more.. no wonder apple discontinued it.. plus it's ugly as hell anyway.

Trust me, the 15" will suit you just fine.. and if you really need the damn 17", then fork out the money or ask them if you can make a deal or something
