any idea why nothing like direct cd exists for mac that lets you mount and use cd-rw like a disk? CD-RW drives are all but worthless on mac as far as i can tell. there seems to be no good way to erase them and reuse.

In addition, anyone have any idea why retrospect support for cd-rw is so poor? I've tried several new cd-rw's and retro won't support them. I've just given up and got the yamaha 16x. maybe in a year retrospect will catch up.

There are programs like that.
I believe there is a Mac version of the Direct CD control panel that does this, but I'm not sure.
There is most definately an app called CDR Access, which lets you use a CD-RW like a floppy disk.
All but useless? Hardly. The best way to use CDRW's is in Toast. Erase, burn, use. Repeat.
Much better than like a floppy disk
Put all your files there, burn it, get a little something to eat and come back and its done.
Not dragging 650 megs of stuff over that could be comprised of 30K files, to the CD...
Not to mention CDRW's weren't designed for that, and that does waste space and take longer in the long run.

But there is a problem with the version of Direct CD for MAc. They haven't updated it in a while, The latest version that I've seen is 1.0.4 and it doesn't support any newer drives. I'm sure that the crack is pretty easy, but I haven't gotten into it with ResEdit yet. And I'm also sure that someone else has already done this......

I have to totaly agree with you about direct cd I got this prog as ver 1.0 and have upgraded each time to 1.4 and it STILL will not 'see' my LaCie USB drive as a re-writer.
