I am looking at replacing my QUE! USB CD-RW drive since it no longer works in OS X and would like to replace it with a FireWire drive. What would be a good replacement? Lacie, EzQuest, others? Any suggestions are welcome. My only requirement is that it works in OS X. I am looking at spending about $200.
Thanks

Search around this forum for "firewire CD-RW" and you'll find a few recent threads on this topic.
I just got a LaCie 24x FW drive. Haven't played with it much yet, but it seems to work well. Don't know about OSX compatibility, but I think you can run Toast 5 Ti in Classic mode and get it to work. Haven't tried it yet myself, but I'd be interested to know if it works - I have an iBook I'd like to be able to burn from.

maybe you're turned off of QPS, but my Que! Fire 24x10x40 works well under 10.1.2 and iTunes 2.0.3.
iTunes 2.0.2 (on 10.1.2) on my brother's TiBook doesn't see the burner, but the newest version does.

(This is my prior post on similar topic on cases discussion.)
Currently added a TDK VeloCD 24x10x40 CDRW to a case from Cooldrives at: http://www.cooldrives.com/fir13oxcden.html
Good price, no tax and fair shipping. Works excellent and noticed speed difference while plugging in an ATA Maxtor 40 gb ($99 at Costco) to move data.
I have assembled several combos of enclosures and drives.
Also ordered another case from Compuvest at: http://www.compuvest1.com/engine/default800.asp?56426
Great price ($68) for firewire case (bought from Compuvest before).
Best Deal of all for another computer was here: http://www.caldrives.com/Merchant2/m...41040sanyo-pci
24x10x40 Sanyo in Firewire 911 enclosure (I know chipset is more useful in HD's than in optical drives) and comes with FREE (no charge) PCI-firewire card ($40 value)
Speak to Walter and mention us at MacNN
This is the current best already assembled package/price firewire CDRW.
The Compuvest case has no fan and I feel it is un-neccessary for most current CDRW drives.
I have used the Caldrive CDRW with OSX and iTunes and is totally satisfying for $187 being used constantly.
The other case has an 80gb Maxtor drive that Staples price-matched Googlegear for $162 and then took off $25 for coupon code 70911 so 80gb external drive in firewire case total cost $247.

Based partially on HouseSold's recommendation, I picked up one of the CompuVest CDRW enclosures ($68 + $16 2-day shipping = $84) and slapped in my "fell off the truck" Sony 10x/4x/32x drive. Successfully burned one disk so far.
The enclosure looks fine; the packaging is hilariously minimal. There are no instructions, no software, and no markings of any kind to indicate who the manufacturer is. It comes in a completely anonymous brown box, like mail-order Viagra or something.
I appreciate the lack of a fan for a CDRW, at least until I run into a heat problem (hopefully never.) When I'm not accessing a disk, it sits silently.
Overall, can't beat the price. Put a supported drive into the enclosure and you're up and running for minimal cash.

I just bought a Que 24x10x40 and it did not work in iTunes in either OS X 10.1.2 or OS 9. I had to do the hack thats at Accelerate Your Mac iTunes finally recognized it but it only burns at 4x! As far as Toast Ti and 10.1.2 the burner works great, just not iTunes. BTW I am running iTunes 2.03.

I've had a Yamaho 8824 FireWire CD-RW for a while now and operation and performance both have been flawless. Mac OS X compatibility right from the start, and the thing just plain works. Always. There are faster and cheaper drives out there, but I put a high price on reliability and ease of use. I'll upgrade when Yamaha makes one that's 24x24x88 and Rapid I/O input.

Forget all that noise.
Get yourself a Lite-On CDRW. They are great drives, inexpensive and have Burn Proof. Put it in an ADS Pyro case and you are ready to go. The ADS Pyro is nice as you can swap out whatever you want, HD, CDRW, almost any IDE device. THe Pyro is < $100 and the Lite-On 24x/10x/40x can be bought for $70 at newegg.com.
I have a few of these drives, they work out of the box and they are great.
