I've seen a few posts here about iPods that were DOA, but comparatively few post when compared to the apple support forums. There are a TON of posts there about iPods being in a coma when they came out of the box. Seems it's a firmware problem, and some people were able to fix it by leaving the iPod alone for 24 hours after the first charge. Before that, it wouldn't come to life at all. Some folks had success opening the iPod case (not recommended) and disconnecting and then reconnecting the battery leads. Then it came back to life. But some would not come back to life at all, no matter what fix people tried. Apple seems to be taking all these back for repairs.
My question is: How widespread is this problem? Usually, when there's a problem like this, you see a lot of posts here about the problem, but not so many on the apple support forums, because they delete posts that make them look bad. But it's just the reverse this time. I'm trying to judge when i should buy one. I'm going to wait until mid Jan. anyway, but I'm wondering if I should wait even longer to have a better chance of getting one with already-upgraded firmware.
I don't mind doing a firmware update myself, but if the thing is totally dead out of the box (even after charging), that isn't an option.
Does anyone else have a sense of what percentage of iPods are DOA? And are all the newer stock of iPods okay because of upgraded firmware?
