What sort of mice do you people use and are there any that you recommend? I'm looking for a multiple button mouse, preferably optical.

I like Microsoft's IntelliMouse Explorer. Five buttons (including a wheel), nice feel, powerful driver. The only problem is that it is strictly for righties. Left handed people should try the IntelliMouse Optical, also from Microsoft.

Be aware that optical mice are not as good as ball mice for games.

Funny, i just bought a Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical at some Office Depot for $29.99 (no tax in OR). I had just spoken to a friend who just bought a Logitech and went with this one because of some driver/button mapping problems with the Logitech. Although it's plain grey, the Microsoft unit feels fine, and the buttons are a little softer than the clear/blue Logitech wheel/mouse-ball at work that I have. I didn't get the higher-end version because I have young kids (too much of a learning curve with all those buttons), and grabbing the demo mice at the store showed that 90% of the time I'd inadvertently click the side buttons.

Overall, love it.

MHO.

I'm using Kensington's TurboBall with my G4. I especially like the ability to scroll with the scroll wheel. Be sure to download the most recent version of MouseWorks from Kensington's web site.

I also use the Intellimouse Explorer, but they're fairly well known for breaking down. I had to have mine replaced (free from Microsoft, but it took a month), and I was told by the customer service rep a fairly huge number have had to be replaced.

If you use Photoshop or any program where you need to zoom on a regular basis, the 4th and 5th buttons on the Explorer are spectacular. I've got one set to zoom and one to zoom out, which makes Photoshop even more of a joy to use.

I use the Logitech Optical Wheel mouse with USB Overdrive, and it's been a really smooth combination up until now, i am very happy! (knock on wood...) :-)

i use exactly the same setup as duboy: logitech optical wheel and usb overdrive.
logitech mice are fantastic, just go get usb overdrive to use them, because the logitech drivers aren't worth it.
usb overdrive is useful in so many ways.
optical is the way to go, imho.

good luck.
poocat.

btw, the logitech is usable by either right- or left-handers.

There's still no USB replacement for the perfect ADB mouse, the Kensington Thinking Mouse (four buttons). Perfect shape, perfect button placement, and good software (e.g. I configured a process menu upon klick on both front buttons, speeds up app change).

I'm currently using a Kensington Turbo Ring. Three buttons is enough and the ring works well in everything except Netscape. It appears to be a Netscape issue. It is for right handers only. The ball has a nice feel and very good overall shape.
