In a macworld tokyo visitors photo report, here, there is an iPod docking station. Does anyone know if this is an actual project or just one of those wildly elaborate Japanees mac hack one-off's, like what has been done with Color Classics and 2400's?

This could be an awesome product if actually produced.

The iPod dock looks really cool! It looks like something that would be for sale, but could very well be a hack as you mentioned. How about if iPods had the Bluetooth or Airport technology inside them? Maybe you could sync the iPod with a Mac and transfer files wirelessly. Way too slow though? You'd still have to connect to something to recharge though. Oh well.[/LIST]

Looks like it would be only for the new iMac users, it would kind of be pointless if I got one for my G4, I would like one the would resemble a Palm sync station.

That docking station couldn't easily be used if you use your iPod with any of the popular cases. I know the leather case surrounding mine would make her too big to fit... And peeling your iPod out of the snug-fitting cases is a lot of trouble (or maybe I just have the wrong brand of case).

It's certainly a neat concept though. I'm sure I'm not alone in saying I'd trade the 'coolness factor' of that polished back for something a little more real-world friendly. Brushed stainless steel, perhaps? Who knows.

Coolness for coolness sake is great... If you're never going to take the thing out of the shrink-wrap, but when I pay $399 for a toy (and others are now paying $499)... I don't want it to look like sh*t the first week I have it.

if you're so paranoid about getting your ipod scratched, then you shouldn't have bought one in the first place. i bet you like sacrificing certain actions in your life so that your piece of hardware doesn't get "ruined." just let the ipod control your life.

Bold words from an unregistered jackass!

When you buy a new car, you're more likely to be careful where you park it. That's human nature... Not a case of a material thing "controlling your life."

Guess you have to have one for it to be controlled though.

when i first got my ipod, it looked AWESOME....after a couple day's use, the back metal section showed fingerprints and scratches. the front also showed scratches really bad....but then i realized that the functionality and features of it far outweighed the scratches. i just learned to accept that it's gonna show scratches and went on with normal use.

the functionality of the ipod far outweighs the superficial scratches it gets through normal use

Yeah, but it seems from your first post that you don't even take the thing out of a case. That is an entire different story from being concerned that you will scratch it. Being careful of not smashing into something with a new car is different than wrapping the entire thing in shrinkwrap.

Oh, and I am registered. But that's a different matter in this case.

Have a nice day.
