So I'm the first to post about the D80?
D80

Since the t-20 day thread had spirlled into a canon vs. Nikon debate, and its now released I figured I could start a new one.

Let me first say I'm a little underwhelmed, while there are some very nice improvements, the whole t-20 day marketing thing started increasing my expectations which this new camera didn't quite live up to.

First off, its SD only, I don't feel like spending a couple a hundred dollars to replace all of my CF cards with SD
Second, a slower flash sync 1/200 vs. the D70s at 1/500.

What I do like is the size, weight, and superior view finder.

I had posted that I was debating between this camera (when it was unreleased) and the MacPro (when that was unreleased) now seeing both of them, I'm going for the MacPro. I think its a better use of my money.

A move by Nikon is to make it available in September as opposed to months and months like they've done before.

If the viewfinder is as good as it sounds it is, I don't think I can resist the temptation to get one

That is one improvement I absolutely wanted/needed.

The biggest detraction in my opinion is Nikon dropping CF cards. I could probably justify spending a grand, but not when I need to buy a bunch of SD cards. I think the wife would kill me if I bought this after dropping 3k on a new MacPro. At least with the MacPro, I had saved up the cash to buy it. I'd need to use credit for the camera and that's a no no for me.

Well, I have a 1 GB CF card already, so I would have preferred to keep it. Well, so I have to sell it with my old camera on ebay

Since I will have to buy lenses as well, it will be a significant investment for me.

I think the D200 may be a better fit for me but I am happy with the performance with my D70. The camera is only part of the picture, having good lenses is key, and I have the very expensive 28-70 f2.8 lens, one of the best out there. its a beast but its awesome, I also have the 85mm f1.4 really a nice lense but I find that I don't use it all that much. I've been toying with ebaying that lense since it cost me so much money and I'm not really using it.

The D200 would also suit my needs better, but then again, I can't afford it. The D70(s) is a nice camera, but the viewfinder is too small (I have glasses and my current camera has a much larger viewfinder, ditto for my last analog slr, my deceased F80).

I was thinking of a nice combo:
- D80
- Tokina 2.8/28-80 Pro AT-X Pro SV (very cheap, but extremely robust and I have taken excellent pictures with it when my F80 was still working, 280 Euros)
- Tokina 4/12-24 mm (got excellent reviews and costs only 420 Euros)

Those two lenses cover the basics at manageable cost. It's still going to be a 1700-1800 Euro investment … money I have yet to earn

Same here

I was saving up for a new desktop since the mini I have wasn't cutting it, so I could have purchased the D200 (or the D80) but MacPro's specs were too much for me to pass up. I'm happy with the performance of my D70s, if i get a bonus at work that might be a possability otherwise I'll have to wait another year or so befoer upgrading my camera.

I've got a D100... This just might be enough to make me upgrade.
