My sister gave me up a call earlier and asked if I knew anything about connecting her TiBook to her TV. She was asking me what cable I had for my dual iBook. Just replied with the normal AV cable. She said she had a S-Video output on her's and was wondering about using that. Well it would work if she had the S-Video cable. Okay so here is it: 1) What are some of the S-Video cables like for macs and where to get them or their rough cost, and 2) would it be possible for her to just use the AV cables I have to run movies from her TiBook to a TV? Yes, the TV does have both the AV inputs/outputs and also has a connection for S-Video. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hey,

No your sister can not use your AV ibook cable. No AV output on the powerbook i think.

That out of the way, what your sister really needs is one S-Video cable and one jack->RCA type cable. The S-Video cable serves as a video transfer thingy and the quality of s-video is far greater than in the yellow rca video connector known to ibook owners. The jack->RCA cable would connect to her sound output on the tibook and into the TV for audio only.

Now as to availability it is hard for me to say, me being in iceland and all. However, any computers store or electronics store will carry these. I'd say the S-Video (gold connector) would go for around $15 and the audio cable for less than $10. Those are the prices here in Iceland and we are usually much more expensive (an iPod costs $629 here )

hope this helps

you sister should already have the cable. It comes with the Ti and turns s-video into rca video (yellow). People use it for playing DVDs on thier TV all the time (or so i hear).

I'd try my own cable but my Ti is out visiting Apple in Calf (getting a new DVD drive)

Mike

PS: part number on the lil' cable for me is 590-1121

Since her TV has S-video input she shouldn't use the adaptor that has S-video on one end and the RCA (yellow) on the other. She should, instead, use a standard S-video cable. The quality of the picture will be better. She probably got a standard S-video cable with the TV. If not, they are quite cheap ($5-$10).

If she's an old mac hand, she might already have the cable. ADB cables can be used as S-Video cables and any keyboard cable from a pre-USB Mac will work fine.

Say **WHAT**?
As American tourists say, " You can- NAT be serious!"

First off, the connector heads have differing numbers of pins, and second, ADB cables were not made (maybe not even able) to transfer video.

It's late, and I'm tired, but you were joking, surely.

Actually, I was being serious. It's true. The ADB cable doesn't provide as much shielding, but it will definitely work as a quick fix.
