A new device " Super Drive " is introduced by Jobs on MacWorld. It is bundle with new 733Mhz G4. I wonder if Apple will make a external one for old G4 or iMac users?
Or will Apple make a external CD-RW for the old users, like me, I am using iMac DV.

Yeah, I'd buy an external SuperDrive too DVDr and CDr/CDrw support along with iDVD - EXCELLENT! But if it's plain CDr that you're looking for with your iMacDV, you don't have to wait for Apple. There are quite a few external USB and Firewire CDr drives available. However, I've got the DV too. I'd prefer an internal slot loading burner to replace the internal DVD. But the burners all seem to be tray load or cartridge. Has anyone found a slot load burner?......joe

Are you sure you would just run out and buy an external Superdrive? If you listened closely to Steve Jobs' Keynote, you would have noticed that he said Superdrives normally retail for $5000. It would make more sense to buy a 733 MHz G4.

No, I think he said that *similar* products *used* to sell for $5000.

I think we'll see a Firewire Superdrive out for the mac within 6 months.

I think Apple should take care about the old users who want to use CD-RW/Super Drive.
All the old machine do not have this type of external storage device. Nowadays, new machine has.
I think if Apple sells external Super Drive, it will make a great income for Apple.

I remember when Apple was in the periperal business, printers. They got out of it because they were not making enough profit. Likewise, they were ignoring the talents of third party developers and therefore for many years Apple had a very small third party base of hardware developers. Since Apple has focused on the platform and OS the developers are crawling out of the woodwork. I think that a third party should provide the firewire "superdrive" and Apple should just focus on including it in future Macs, not providing it to users with older hardware.

As usual Jobs tells half-truths. Pioneer *do* also make a 5400 dollar drive similar to the one that Apple will soon be bundling but the more expensive drive is able to encode CSS data. This capability is important for serious DVD content creators as it prevents the DVDs from being easily copied. The cheaper drive which Apple will be bundling is not able to encode such data and is being made by available by Pioneer quite shortly as an internal ATAPI device at a suggested retail price of 995 dollars. Compaq are also going to be bundling this drive with some of their top-end PC's so it's hardly going to be an Apple exclusive.
