Hey all:
My sis and I got my semi-mac proficient parents a Kodak 3600 for
Christmas. Upon receipt, they installed the software, and ever since have had problems with their iMac Rev B. (os8.6, 288 mb ram). It seems a silly "welcome" file has killed the startup process, so they can't get on the internet or even startup, except by disabling extensions.
The installation process ended with the message "welcome file could not be opened, as application that created it could not be found." After asking
my dad more questions, I found out that this welcome file was a .html file, and should have automatically opened up in IE or Netscape, both of
which they have installed. Why it did not is a mystery.
They went on, figuring they could live without the welcome file and its tutorials, registration, etc., and spent the day playing with their camera. At the end of the day, they shut down the iMac.
The next day, when they attempted to start up the iMac, they were greeted with "welcome file could not be opened blah blah blah" and then the computer
froze and would not start up. This happens repeatedly until they shut off extensions. I hope it's not an extension, god help me if I have to walk him thru troubleshooting extensions...
The iMac has plenty of RAM (288) and disk space, they shut down all other applications before installing, they've rebuilt the desktop repeatedly.
Does the Kodak install put something in the system>startup items folder? Why is the welcome.html file not finding the browser software?
I'd like to know how a simple tutorial program, in HTML, no less, is messing up my parents computer. They are not very techy, and it's very hard for me
to troubleshoot for them, as they are in Florida and I'm in Massachusetts. I hope my dad installed everything correctly, but you never know. If I were there, it's possible he just has to click something to make it all better, but so hard to do over the phone. Argh! Parents!
Any help would be much appreciated!
