I am thinking of purchasing the ClubMac 100GB FireWire hard drive 7200. Before I do I thought I would ask if anyone knows which drives ClubMac uses in their brand of external hard drives? The documentation on the ClubMac web site says: "Now using Oxford 911 FireWire interface!" What is the Oxford 911 FireWire interface and how important is that?

The 911 chip is part of the card (bridge-board) that forms the interface between the firewire port and the IDE bus that the drive is on. The Oxford 911 is (i think) the fastest of these chips. Non-911 firewire bridge boards will have poorer performance - using a 7000 RPM drive without 911 is probably not worth it.

robo from ai is right on the money with the oxford interface. I called them up and asked them what drives they use in them once. It was maxtor and something else, if i remember correctly. THe guy was happy to tell me. I fin ally decided to put a new HD in the mac instead though, so i dont have any experience with them. But from what i can tell they're pretty good drives. I mean its just a FW->ide case with a drive shoved into it. So you should be fine, and from what i can tell, clubmac has the best prices on those drives, so id definitely go for it.
