We are buying a new G4500 for our graphics dept but want to continue to use our old SCSI Agfa Arcus II scanner with it. Anyone have good experiences with any particular SCSI to USB converter(s) in a similar scenario (OS 9.0.4, etc) that they could recommend?

thanks

I have a G4 with a Belkin USB - SCSI converter. I run a Polaroid Sprintscan and CDR off the it. It seems to work well and I only have one complaint. Occasionally, I will have to turn off the power to the devices and turn them back on before my machine sees them.

I think I would recommend a PCI SCSI card if you plan to do a lot of work with the scanner though.

What's wrong with Adaptec 2906 PCI card ($49)? 10MB/sec so you can attach SCSI devices w/o the USB which is very limited. 2930U ($89) allows booting from SCSI HD and offers 20MB/sec.

There is FireWire-SCSI adapter you might also want to investigate.

I use the 2930 to hookup ext. SCSI to backup and transfer files and to connect two scanners (35mm and flatbed). Save your USB for other uses that can more easily live on 1.2MB/sec channel.

Part of the reason I got a G4 was that none of the USB/SCSI converters seemed adequate for more than a couple kinds of devices. Since I have SCSI devices ranging from scanner to removable media drives (USB converters seem to have problems with scanners and Zip drives), I decided to just get the minitower and put in a SCSI card. If you're laready getting a minitower, you may as well get the PCI card (if you can spare the slot) for better performance and the price isn't much different.

I have a G4 500 with a second video card and the SCSI card. A La Cie 18 gig hard drive, a Nikon LS-2000 slide scanner and a La Cie CD-RW are chained to the SCSI. I've had good response and no problems other than the typical quirkiness of SCSI. Just make sure everything is on before you start up the Mac.

I asked the adeptec people about their USB -> SCSI converter and they said it only handles one device at a time. You have to change settings and restart each time you change devices.
The entrega USB -> SCSI converter is supposed to allow you to connect as many devices as you want at once.
I agree, get the 2906 if you have the extra PCI slot. The difference in speed and the compatability make it worth it. Plus it is only $50 compared to $80 for a USB -> SCSI.

If you wanna use an AGFA scanner on a G4, why would you get a SCSI to USB adapter when you can just get a SCSI card?

Definately get a SCSI card. I have the 2906 and have no probs with it. I may upgrade to a faster one in future, but at the moment that isn't an issue.

We just got a lab full of G4 cubes. Am trying to connect a Umax Astra 1200S using the Entrega SCSI to USB connector. No matter what I do, I cannot get my computer to recognize the scanner. Any ideas?

Definitly go the SCSI card route. Absent that, the OrangeConverter SCSI>>FW is the better option, USB is a step in the wrong direction.
