I am trying to put a custom ringtone on my new SLVR L6 (unlocked). The phone's documentation says that it supports AAC and mp3 audio files.
I converted the 5-second audio file that I want to use for my custom rington to an mp3 in iTunes (64 kbps mono), then used Bluetooth File Exchange to put the file on my phone. It appears to transfer, but then I get a message on the phone saying "File Type Not Recognized". The screen then switches back to the Home display, and I can't find the file in the audio folder.
Anyone know what I am doing wrong here? Is there a way to work around this and get it to go?
Any help would be appreciated. I'll post the ringtone here once I get it to work.
Thanks in advance.

i have a SLVR L7, and I just use mp3 ringtones i trim down using audacity and lameenc. I've had problems with bitrates over 256kbit and VBR files, but the little speaker doesnt need anything over 128kbit files imo...

I just downloaded a program called MP3Trimmer. I really like it. You can chop any part of an MP3 that you want, rip it, change the volume, etc. and save it. Then I shoot it to my RAZR via Bluetooth.

I'd really like to ressurect(sp?) this thread.
I just got a SLVR L7 and I'd like to put a custom ringtone onto it. Can someone tell me step-by-step how to do this? Specifics, too... length, programs, how exactly and where to put it in the phone, etc. I'm having a hard time doing to with the intructions listed above and I'd just like to start from scratch. Please help a n00b.

I have a SLVR and have had great success with putting custom tunes on. One program I would recommend trying out is something called Audio HiJack. For those who aren't familiar with its purpose, it allows the user to record output from an application. I have used it to record audio from a few flash animations and compressed the recording into mp3 by using Audacit along with the lamelib. Once that was done I used the bluetooth file exchange app to put the mp3 files onto my SLVR. If you would like a more detailed explaining, just pm me and i'll explain what it is your aren't certain about.

I just tried the Mac OSX demo for Xingtones the other day. You probably could go through a bunch of apps to accomplish the task of uploading custom ringtones to your SLVR, but I found that this was good, too. I did use Audio Hijaak to get music out of iTunes that wasn't cooperating. But once I picked it up in Xingtones, I just edited it down and sent it to my cell phone.
The application is not completely stable and it could take some time to edit your ringtone down to perfection. But I must say, it sounds pretty good when it's done, I can certainly hear my phone with the tune I picked and not those crappy disco tunes that come with the phone. You must have text messaging capabiity to use it, but most people seem to have that. With the tune I picked, my ring sounds almost as good as the Palm Treo.
The demo will allow you to upload 1 or 2 ringtones to try it out, so give it try. Personally I'm considering just paying the $19.99 for the software to have multiple ringtones. Oh yeah, one serial will only send to one phone, but I think you can get discounts on multiple purchases and perhaps even get some deal with them to sell your ringtones. Anyway, check it out, as it does seem easy.
Good luck

Disclamer: I own the company I'm about to mention.
Xingtone is alright, but I found it to be WAY too buggy on my powerbook to be useful. That was about 1/4th the reason I created Own Your Phone: Your Music; Your Ringtone. It's a web-based way of doing the same thing xingtone does...but it's less buggy, simpler, and much cheaper.
Good luck.
