I'm about to throw myself out the window... Can anybody help!?! I've got a QPS Que 4x2x8 USB CD-RW using Toast 4.0.1.1. My problem is that anytime I try to burn a CD at 4x I get that "invalid sense code blah, blah, blah" error that indicates an under-run. I can burn at 2x with the drive plugged into my keyboard and the rest of my USB peripherals (scanner, printer, Palm V, Wacom tablet) plugged into a hub connected to the other USB port.
Now... I figured if I unplugged the hub and stuck the Que! in that port I would free up bandwith for a 4x burn. But everytime I do that, the system locks up or crashes upon booting up. I've tried creating minimal extension sets (so that no driver is loaded that's looking for the missing peripherals). Still crashes. I've tried just booting up with 9.0.4 base and all extension sets + only the QPS/Toast extensions (in both Conflict Catcher and Extension Manager). Still crashes. In fact, if I boot up with ONLY 9.0.4 base (or all) set and NOTHING but the keyboard and mouse plugged in it STILL CRASHES.
Am I stuck with a 2x burn? Does anybody have any idea what's going on??? Please, any hints would help.
Thanks,
Eric

USB burners, since its introduction, have been bad with burning speed, while it's more expensive than a SCSI or IDE. my recommendation is go through http://www.xlr8yourmac.com, where there are a lot of stuff regarding incompatibilities etc. Also, you can email Mike who runs the site, and if he doesn't have any clue, your question might get posted and read by much more people than members of this forum...who knows...

We have one of these burners at work, and I have the exact same problem. It will only burn at 2X (and this is on a G4-450, so hardware shouldn't be a problem). I should have bought a SCSI drive!
We had a 4X parallel port burner on one of our PCs, and it always worked fine, so maybe USB has a lower bandwidth or something...

The Que usb burner was the worst hardware purchase I have ever made! Get rid of yours immediately. Sure, it looks cool but it simply does not work the way it should. The company's "customer service" is a joke. They never returned any of my 6 or so emails and their website has many contradictory suggested settings to fix problems. When I bought my imac with firewire I splurged and bought a Fantom firewire CDRW and have never burned a coaster. My failure rate with the Que was more than half. That's a lot of wasted CDR's. STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY!!!!!!!!!!!

Seems like I'm not alone. BTW I'm running a G4 450/256mb so processor speed should not be an issue.
I think I've learned my lesson with QPS (I bought the drive not because it looked like an iMac and it was the size of a Buick, but because Macworld gave it a great review. How wrong they were!) but I remain baffled: why is my G4 crashing when I start up with nothing but 9.0.4 extensions and control panels loaded!?! Has anyone else ever had this problem?
Thanks,
Eric

Has anyone had experience with or heard anything about the QPS Que 4x4x24 FireWire CD-RW? Perhaps the lesson to be learned here is to go with FireWire instead of USB.

to my knowledge, firewire drives are simply IDE with fancy firewire-adaptor casing...on the other hand, I've read good compatibility with 12x Plextor internal IDE...

Well... I fixed it. At least for now. I was right about needing to remove all other USB devices from the chain, the problem was doing it and not crashing...
For some reason when I booted up with just the 9.0.4 set it would crash. I finally got a conflict test to work and it determined that the Control Strip was causing the problem. Why?? I don't know. Anyway, disabling that enabled me to start up with minimal extensions + Toast/QPS extensions and I was able to burn at 4x! (I did a simulation first, of course).
Anyway, thanks for everyone's input. I still think this thing is a piece of crap, but at least it's doing what it's supposed to (for now).
