morning all,

well apple australia is still yet to announce the price of the ipod in australia and have posted a 'coming soon' notice in the applestore.

obviously they are having a long and hard look at the price because at current exchange rate it will cost upwards of AUS$900 (taking into account apple australia's recent pricing with powermacs and powerbook and apple uk's decision to add to the price). here's hoping they will decide to bring it down to somewhere around the AUS$800 mark. has anyone here in australia heard any whispers as to what the price may be or when it'll be released?

i'd really love to get one of these in my hot little hand, but price will be a major factor and if it does turn out to be more than AUS$900 then i may have to let it slip by.

i must say though, after watching steve jobs' speech to the press i was mightily impressed. apple really has done an amazing job with this.

If they do a straight currency conversion the US$399 will come out to around AUS$800. Usually they add more on to that for "shipping costs" (yeah right!). Then add 10% GST and you could easily be looking at $900-$1000 dollars. That is an extremely high price for such a product in Australia. In fact I'd say they haven't put a price on so people won't fall over in shock so close to the product announcement.

I have ze contacts at apple aus, but haven't heard anything about this device. It should cost $800 however, but if they are in cheap-pricks mode it will be $900, no more.

If it was any more, order it from the US! Would be way cheaper.

Yeah until Customs gets a hold of it. Then in addition to international shipping you will have to pay around a $44 dollar "inspection fee" (bascially they generate an invoice of how much you owe) and then GST on the declared value.

My prediction: $895 inc GST.

It's actually A$34 but it still sucks.

Also, being an Apple product, most mail-order outfits wouldn't send it because that would be "gray importing" eg, outpost.com has a "Not available for export" attached to everything Apple.

But... if you have a mate in the US, you could get them to mail it USPS with a declared value of < $250 and labelled as "repaired goods".

Result: street value US pricicing and no GST.

Downsides: 1) not using FedEx exposes you to risk of loss.
2) You might get anthrax.
