A simple question I think.
Until now I have been printing from my 7600 (OS 9.0.4) to an HP2100tn printer using localtalk/appletalk. Now I want to print through the ethernet port but can't seem to make it work. I connected the ethernet cable directly from the ethernet port on the 7600 to the ethernet port on the printer (no hubs or switches for now). I've tried everything but can't seem to make it work. Is there a trick?

You either need a hub, or a "crossover" ethernet cable. You can get both for cheap.
