You don't have to buy it just now, it will come down in price, and someone else will bring out something similar if it does well.

Get over it.

Now for the important issue -

The iPod is a rather nifty new wee gadget, now that's a given. The problem as I see it is the new unability to take MP3s with you on this wee thing and transfer into another machine. I realise this is all a bit dodgy in the old legal department, and know exactly why Apple have done this. However, to cover myself in the theoretical void of legality - picture the scene...

I have a G4 and an iMac. The iMac is at home, whilst my G4 is at my Villa in Ibiza, where I do 2 days every month at Manumission (remember this is theoretical). I create 2 new mixes on Friday afternoon before leaving for Ibiza. Currently I rip them into MP3 and upload them to my Rio 500 for listening to on the plane and working out any tweeks, whilst also burning the Aiff files onto CD so I can fiddle with them before finally bringing them to the seething throng. WIth me doing this kinda stuff the iPod would've seemed to be perfect. I could upload my AIFFs and listen to them on the plane, then download them onto my G4 when I got to my Villa. However, the convenience of this has just been 'thwarted' as I will have to upload both through iTunes and Firewire disk mode - effectively doubling the time, and doubling the storage I need to use.

I don't mind using the Firewire disk mode - but why make doubles of the things your copying.

The solution? I reckon the way the disk is formatted must just be with some sort of hidden folder ( as many people have claimed the drive to be in HFS+ format ), does anyone know if we could get 'manual' access to this section some how - it would be most helpful.

(Okay - so I use Zips to transfer my own MP3s between my work and home computers, whilst using an MP3 player on my way home. As I have over 8 Gb in my MP3 collection, which is about a fifth of my CD collection, I don't want to have to rip all these things twice! It's not as if I'm stealing anything)

Now that I'm justified in intent...
Hark, I hear a robin sig'ing in the trees!
Nae, there is no sog to be sug,
or am I wrog? Why can't I sig?

Apparently that's only the behavior in "auto-mode" when syncing with iTunes, etc.

There's a manual mode that let's you do what you want.

(Have fun in Ibiza, and take protection against social diseases.)
