A friend has the answering service offered by the phone company whereby waiting messages are signaled by lifting the receiver to hear a series of small dial tone bursts, followed by the regular dial tone. When I'm there and want to connect online, I have to add commas to the front of the phone number to have it pause long enough to let the phone play the pulses and get to the dial tone.

Here's the problem - sometimes that works and other times it does not. I can put 4 or 6 or more commas in there and it still tries to dial before the phone is ready. (Is that making any sense?)

Any ideas what else I can try?

Go to:

System Folder -> Control Panels -> Modem

And check "ignore dial tone"

No more need for commas...
