i'm going to be travelling and visiting family, and would like to be able to scan in a bunch of photos on the trip. therefore, i need a portable scanner that will give me at least 600dpi, and weighs less than my pismo.
any ideas?

Canon had two scanners (slim, flatbed) they were showing at MWNY but i think they are not yet shipping... they'd easily fit into a briefcase or backpack... i would've bought one on the spot, but they were not shipping them then... soon!

I've been using a Visioneer Strobe Pro on my G4 with zero problems - well, almost zero. Sometimes, the G4 won't shut down with it connected...this has happened with other USB peripherals, so it's not just the Strobe. Anyways, I just leave it up to crunch SETI work units so who cares?

work bought me a canonfb 630u, which is a small and slim little thing. it looks good, and it's lightweight if you were to be porting it around. it's pretty slow as it scans the document, and i haven't been very impressed with the colors (compared to my epson at home, anyway). the other nice thing for portablility is that it draws all power from the USB bus. (no AC power supply)
overall, it works and it's cheap, but it sure ain't nothing special. it would definately meet your portability standards, just don't expect a performance workhorse.
