I bought an HP Photosmart 1115 yesterday because my trusty Epson800 went dead. I got the HP because it had the option of printing from a digital camera disk directly.

But I am not impressed so far. First there is an option that sets Photoshop images to print in greyscale by default (why ???) and then the printing of color photos is definitely not on par with the Epson. Photos have exagerated contrast and a weird milky quality (?) to them. I tried 2 different papers with the same result.

I am thinking of returning this printer to BestBuy and getting the Epson 820 or 785EPX. I was wondering if anyone on this esteemed community had any thoughts or esperiences with any of these...

Thanks for any help.

I have the Epson Photo 870, a predecessor to the current models. It is by far the best printer I've ever seen. The more current versions (which 2 friends have) seem to maintain that same lever of quality.

I also own an 870, which was replaced by the 820. I dabble in nature photography, and the Epson photo printers produce the best quality photo prints I've seen in an affordable consumer inkjet! I've got inkjet prints that you'd swear were lab prints. Also, Apple released updated drivers for many Epson printers, through software update in OS X, today, and I'm pretty sure the 820 was on the list.

The HPs do a good job, although they are only four color printers, whereas the Epson Photo 820 uses a six color system. This gives you two extra colors, light cyan, and light magenta, to do a better job on skin tones and the middle color range.

Why is there always money for war, but none for education?
