No one has mentioned Macs on the floor or a hard to reach place? What if I put my G4/Cube on the floor on up on a shelf? What about a rack mounted Mac? How do I turn it on without an Apple monitor?
What if I have a control box that allows 3 Macs on one monitor or vice-versa? What then? What if I don't like Apple monitors or their prices (big surprise)?
More proprietary products are not going to sell more Macs. Not to me at least. If I was resigned to a bundle of crud, I'd buy a Gateway or Compaq. I buy the best components for my Mac and now that control has been removed from me.
THE FINAL ANALYSIS is that humans resist change. My father, who so frequently advises me of this fact, is wondering when this Big Bang of computer technology will just expand (or collapse) to the effect that no one will buy a new computer because of the fact that they'll have to color coordinate their house to it, buy all new peripherals, learn all new software, download patches every 4 days, hire a full-time consultant, and be frustrated every 5 months when a new model is released with absolutely no compatibility or upgrade path to the old. Hmm...sounds familiar already.
Being an avid Apple technician/consultant it was never difficult to choose and maintain a bench full of compatible monitors, keyboards and peripherals for all the different types of Macs that I see weekly, until now. Perhaps this is just another method by the industry to remove service providers. Unfortunately, it appears to be doing the same thing to consumers.
More thought please Apple! We aren't all new users or 14 years old.
