I have a machine at work with my MP3 library on it. I'd like to leave a FireWire cable permanently attached to that machine and get another to use for charging my iPod when I'm not at work.

The literature suggests that you should only use the Apple FireWire cable with the iPod. Is that for some good reason or just liability BS? Can I buy, say, a Belkin FW cable and use it eith my iPod OK?

Cheers,
Fraser

My exprience says the warnings are BS. I have used several different FW cables with my iPod w/o incident. Cables used have been the no name variety bundled with a VST FW HD and a Que FW CD-RW. I have also used my iPob cable with my VST drive w/o porblem.

The belkin cables are nice, but pretty expensive. If you must my a Belkin Cable, don't buy it at Best Buy. For reasons unknown, they charge 20%-50% more for their cables than other local retailers (office depot, wal-mart, target, etc)

I think they just want to keep you away from Sony FireWire cables, because Sony's version of FireWire does NOT provide a power feed (meaning your iPod battery wouldn't get recharged). Other than that, all other third-party FireWire cables should be fine.
