Someone will soon no doubt refer to this article at MacCentral and this quote:

"This means if you take your iPod to someone else's house, you can't just suck out their songs and store them into your song library," Joswiak said. "It will load their songs, but it will erase your song library in doing so."

This quote refers to the iTunes synch feature of the iPod! You can still and always copy MP3s via FW hd mode! So please, in the name of all that is holy, think before you rant.

Gorn Out.

To late, I started a huff on Friday:
http://newforums.macnn.com/cgi-bin/u...4&t=003899

It is not as easy as going to firewire mode as the files are invisible and iTunes will not see any new MP3's added to the drive in this manner.

The only invisible files are those that you *sync*. If you dump mp3s on the iPod via the fw disk, they are normal, visible files that iTunes will ignore.

If iTunes ignores them what is the point?

Vivé la France!

ummm dude,

you have to get rid of the accent egu (é) thing, the correct
way of spelling the above sentence would be, Vive la France.

Don't want to be a PITA, but thought you might want to know.

WHO CARES IF IT GETS RID OF YOUR SONGS!

You have them on your computer. Just use firewire-disk mode to copy them BACK to your computer. Then when you re-sync you get BOTH your songs AND your friends. If that doesn't work (and you can't see those 'synced files' in disk-mode there is an alternative.

I see this as a GREAT boon for MP3s! Think about it, even if you can't get the files from the iPod (when 'synced' in through iTunes).

If you really want your friends MP3s, just copy them on via firewire disk mode. Then bring them home and add them to your collection and resync! So the inconvenience is that you can't have them until you get home and resync; what's the big deal!?!

This is a great device! Its a portable hard drive and can get rid of the use of CD-Rs for MANY uses. I used to transfer files via writing a CD-R. While its inexpensive, it just gets in the way of the real goal (simply moving files). For that, I find the device compelling.

At the end of the day, the goal is to *get the music*. All you have to do is copy the mp3s to the Mac via FW, then upload them back to the iPod via iTunes. Sure it's an annoying workaround, but if it means keeping the RIAA Nazis off Apple's back, fine by me.

Now, I'm wondering if once in FW mode, if it's possible to just move the mp3s into the invisible folder thus making it immediately visible on the iPod? I've yet to read of someone trying this move, but would be cool to see.
