I just purchased a 400 Mhz G4 and need speakers. What are some good choices that will match my computer. I have read the message boards and the Monsoon 700 series seems to be a popular choice. Is the fact that the speakers are very directional a problem. Does that mean that you have to sit directly in front of the speakers to get the best sound. I will mainly use the speakers for music mainly jazz. I am mostly interested in good midrange, highs, and imaging. Are there any other good choices besides the Monsoons. Has anyone heard the Harman Kardon Sound Sticks at the NY convention. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Since when do you want speakers that look like your computer, I thought you want speakers that sound good, not how they look... Anyway, look into cambridge soundworks, they make excellent products; if you want some gaming power, look into Klipsch's Promedias...

monsoons are not so uni-directional at all, the new HK Sticks are very uni-directional...
the monsoons are quite good, they are flat-panel speakers which radiate sound at or near 180 degrees... whereas normal conventional cone-type speakers such as the HK Sticks radiate at or near 90 degrees... big diff
and it seems to me that the speaker enclosures (Sticks) make them even more uni-directional than normal cones....
i have demo'ed both (and not at that noisy expo hall either)

repost! due to the original poster (PJ G4) making a boo-boo with the back button in IE5 i think, resulting in two 'G4 Speakers' posts...

I use Altec Lansing on a G4. Comes with sub and they're great in any part of the room. Sound as good as my stereo system.

Harmon Kardon have just realesed a new speaker/ subwoofer combi that's designed to work specificaly with Apple computers (running OS9.0.4 +) & would look & sound great with your G4, just check Apple or Harmon Kardon's website.

could not have said it better than exa.
For general purposes, Cambridge Soundwork's Microworks (US$150) are very good speakers. For DVDs and gaming, Klipsch Promedias (US$250) are the first THX rated computer speakers (they are also 4.1, so unless you have a soundcard Creative Labs promised, you won't be able to take advantage of the 4.1 surround sound). The Monsoon 700s also got really good reviews, and is probably the most "stylish" of the three.

G4/450, T-bird 1.05GHz, iBook 500, iBook 233...4 different machines, 4 different OSes...(9, 2k, X.1, YDL2.2 respectively) PiA to maintain...

Moving this to the Peripherals forum...
...and the 700s are an awesome set of speakers, imo. Not at all directional.
