I am planning to purchase a new G4. I am currently using a PowerComputing clone (a 604), and I connect to the internet through the ethernet port to a cable modem (3com CMX); my ISP is MediaOne (their "RoadRunner" service). My problem is an existing HP LaserJet 5MP printer which is currently connected by LocalTalk. My understanding is that I can use an ethernet-to-localtalk bridge (Farallon or Asante) to continue using the printer with a modern Macintosh (and possibly network the old computer on localtalk for file and printer sharing).
What is the best way to handle the issue of needing two ethernet connections? Do I need to create a small network with a hub, or do I need a router? I understand from reading in some forums that MediaOne's RoadRunner service can be cranky in some configurations; they charge an extra fee for their "home networking" service.
Alternatively, should I/can I install an additional ethernet card in the new G4 to connect to the localtalk bridge, leaving the built-in ethernet port for the cable modem alone? Sharing of the internet access on the old computer is not important to me at this point, though I might like to have it networked on the LocalTalk side of the bridge.
I know a new USB printer might be cheaper, but I need PostScript printing and the HP has many years left on it.
Thanks in advance for any advice; I'll post this in the "G4" section as well, so apologies if you see it twice.
