If you can find one, Apple's 21" Studio Display with ColorSync is the best. Before it was discontinued, it cost $1499 (or $1409 for Education customers). If you can't find this display (or it costs too much), go for the 22" Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2040u ($1150 at Outpost.com). If that's too much money, go with the 22" Mitsubishi Diamond Plus 200 ($930 at Outpost.com).
As for Sony displays, in my experience, they tend to be of lower quality and cost more than comparable Mitsubishi displays. ViewSonic displays, in my experience, are terrible.

I have an original (non-graphite) Apple 21" Studio Display and it’s great. I haven’t had any problems with it, and the built-in USB hub is nice. Picture is great and full-screen DVDs are wonderful. I justified the price by reminding myself that I’ll have this monitor for a long time, and I know I will. The only thing I recommend: make sure you have a strong desk, this thing is a BEAST! I kept the original box and foam because moving it "naked" would be difficult/dangerous.
My second choice would be a LaCie. I haven’t seen them in action, I just think they look cool

ok, heres another question, what is the advantage of Hz? what is the difference between a Sony that has a max resolution of 2048x16XX @60Hz and a Mitsubishi that has a max resolution of 1600x1200 @85Hz?

after seeing the specs on the Hitachi monitors, I'd have to say that I'm quite impressed. The monitor appears quite flat, and have very high refresh rates with low dot-pitch, comparable to that of the Apple monitors, which if I recall correctly, use Mitsubishi's Diamondtron technology. The 19" and the 21" Hitachi's are worth considering (.22 horizontal, .14 vertical), especially since they are much cheaper than what Apple has to offer. (US$440 for 19")

We have been happy with both Hitachi and with ViewSonic. The ViewSonic P815 is a great value at less than $900 (When last we bought one about six months ago).

In response to luap82 -
From what I hear, refresh rates below 70 Hz can be harmful to one's eyes if they use their computers for more than three hours straight without a significant break every day.
It does hurt you eyes a bit -- I can coax my iMac monitor into doing 1280x1024 @ 60 Hz, and the screen is pretty dark (even if I turn the brightness up). And it flickers more, and it seems to always... "wave"...
Anyhow, I don't use that resolution very often--1024x768 suits most of my needs, and 1600x1200 is larger than you would think! And 2048x1600 is... wow... I have used 19" monitors at 1600x1200, and everything seems very small, so I can't imagine what 2048x1600 would look like...
Sorry if I seem to be ranting on, it's 2:30 AM CST, and I'm very tired . In fact , I think I'll go to sleep after hitting "Submit Reply" ...
good night, everyone... yawn...
