Looking for some advice. I'm trying to capture video from a dvd recorder's HDD. The recorder has a hdmi output and I need to get the video into the imac's mini dvi. Can I do this with a hdmi to dvi cable to a dvi to mini dvi converter? Will capture recognize the input?
Appreciate any suggestions..

You can't input video into the Mini's mini DVI. Your best and probably only good bet would be to get a video-firewire converter and use the S-Video out of your recorder.

Getting from HDMI into something usable would cost a good amount of money. The only options I can think of are broadcast products, not cheap.
