Sounds pretty reasonable considering Australia always gets the huge price cinversions.

So comparing prices based on today's rates:
AUD 895 = USD 451
GBP 349 = USD 507
JPY 47800 = USD 392
Looks like Japan is the cheapest place to get an iPod. Why is it so expensive in the UK?

Like with nearly everything non-domestic you buy - the importer/distributor markets the device/clothes/car/whatever at the price he/she believes the market will pay. Imported cars in Australia are much more expensive than in Europe - same goes for computer equipment and the States - so much cheaper there and yet most Macs are (probably) made in Asia.

Turn over a Japanese iPod and it says,
"Made up Two Streets on Your Right"

Japanese quality made products are excellent!
Its the cheaper malaysian, korean stuff that is where they cut corners.
If ipod was definately made in Japan I would certainly buy it, a greatr reassurance of made in japan, i guess thats why I like hitachi.

I suppose it depends on how you define "made"; the drive is Toshiba, the battery Sony.
I don't know if this has been making the rounds or not but I found this on a Nikkei page:

If you go to the Apple Australia home page, they've put up a link to register an email address to be notified when the iPod becomes available locally.
Interesting. I wonder if they are using that to gauge local interest.
But more likely the Apple Store has got sick of answering the phones with the FAQ!
