Swapping the iPod's HD..

Sorry if this has been approached before, but I didn't see anything.
Lacie's Portable Hard Drives measure almost the same dimensions as the iPod. Now, if the HD is the same size, I wonder how difficult it would be to put in a larger hard drive.
I think the trick would be getting the format right.. Any thoughts on this?

The harddrive in the iPod is the 1.8" Toshiba, and the 5 gig in the iPod is the largest one available. All other drives are bigger and won't fit.
Formatting wouldn't have been a problem though, the iPod is a simple HFS+ format.

actually formatting is a problem, apple state the FAQ that formatting iPod might disable the mp3 playing function. which leads us to think, maybe there's some kind of "app" running in the harddrive.
