From this PDF file, you see that in fact, rechargeable batteries do go bad, and the one Apple has chosen (UP325385A4H) will last a little over 500 charges. Assuming you get 10 hours for each charge, then you can expect 5000 hours of music before you will have to replace the battery. That is plenty for me, and that's why I bought one.
