Stupid question, and I'm cringing for sounding like a newbie:

How does one insert a standard CD into a DVD-RAM drive? I'm serious. I know that the double sided media is locked into a cartrdige, very much like the old cartridge loading CDROM drives that used to be so commonplace. Does one have to put all other media into a cartridge or what?

TIA, and sorry for the silly question ;-)

Nope. there are these prongs that will hold a 'naked' cd and they fold out of the way when you put a cart in.

the whole mechanism is weird, that's the best way i can explain it though.

yeah u just pop it in like a slot-loading drive. Its kinda like a combination between a slot-load and a tray-load. the tray comes out, and you push the cd into the tray. This is IMO a pain in the ass and i bought a DVDROM instead for this reason.

At the risk of beingannoying, anyone got a picture? I dug around on online vendors and couldn't find a picture of how you actually load the thing...

Oooh thank you Rivak! Definitely much appreciated. When everything's retracted, does a door cover up the entire assembly, or is does the faceplate have a slot just large enough for the mechanism to extend? (no need for more photos.)

Again, thanks

There's a door on the drive itself that folds down when it's open. There’s also a door on the case of the G3/4 that folds down, (it's spring-loaded so when the drive opens it is forced open and when it closes it springs back into the closed position). This "secondary door" also has a secondary button that presses the button on the drive itself. This secondary door/button assembly is on all G3s and G4s.

note: you won't see this secondary door in the photos because i took it off.

In other words, just like every other machine with a CD-ROM or DVD based on the current form factor.

I really wish Apple would have gone with a slot-loading DVD drive on the G4s. That door is really cheap looking and feeling, and I completely understand why you removed it.

Yeah i know what you mean. I took the door off because i couldn't get to the button on the drive, and because the spring had gotten stretched somehow and the door didn't close all the way. it looks fine with it off anyway..
