I have an old UMAX SCSI Scanner. I'm happy with the quality of the scans but it is slow compared to newer models and sometimes makes a loud grinding noise - so I'm thinking of replacing it.

One of the things I don't like about it - I'm finding is common on other scanners... No Power button. Everytime I want to use it I crawl under my desk and plug it in. Then when I'm finished I unplug it. I suppose if I left it pllugged in the lamp would eventually go off. I don't know how long this takes though and it seems like it would wear out the lamp prematurely. I also hate using the big clunky AC Adapter which takes up more space and gets pretty warm. I'd probably unplug it anyway when I'm gone for fear of fire.

Does anybody make a good scanner that uses an ordiinary plug and actually has a switch to turn the scanner on and off when needed?

Well, my slim CanoScan 1220 (1240? I forget) has no separate power cord, just a USB cable. Plug it in, and it waits in a low-power "sleep" mode. Start a scan, and it wakes up.

Want to turn it totally off? Just unplug the USB cable.

It's a nice scanner. Not the fastest (a limitation of USB, I suspect), but plenty fast for my uses, and a great slim profile and easy use.
