I am wondering if anyone has figured out a solution for using the Spressa FW drive.

I have successfully burned audio disks, but for the life of me I cannot get the drive to burn data. Not disk images or even file by file. I have tried using toast 4.1, 4.2, and the bundled Discribe software (crap). And B's Recorder Gold doesn't recognize the drive.
With Toast I have burned an audio CD to CD copy, and an MP3 conversion. But when I try data, the drive doesn't respond.

I have an iMac DV/SE. FireWire is 2.3.3 ( I downgraded from 2.4)

If I can't get this baby to burn data, I will need to return it.

Any help?

I'm in the same situation - same drive and same iMac. I've already called Outpost.com for an RMA number to return it. I'm going to hold off a day to try and see if the comments from http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/ will help out. Select the Drive Compatibility reports section and fill in the appropriate search info. You'll find a lot of info on what people have been doing to make the Spressa drive work (including the FireWire downgrade you've performed). It sounds like removing the Sony extensions is the best advice, so far.

I have the same imac, same drive and no problems burning anything. I use none of the included software or drivers, only the apple firewire enabler 2.4 and the toast 4.1 extensions. Make sure you have virtual memory turned OFF! That did give me a problem.

MSchienle -

Dont return your drive just yet. Thanks for that link to the archive. My Spressa burner now works beautifully. And it's hella fast.

Anyways, this is what I had to do to get it to work. I removed everything related to the Sony software that came with it. The two main files are the I.Link enabler, and the CD driver application. get those out of your system folder, and Toast will recognize the drive as a fire-wire drive, rather than a SCSI. ( I guess the i.Link soft would make the drive pretend to be scsi?)

Also, I have virtual memory turned off.

I will try later with VM on, but I hear that many prblems occur while VM is on.

Also, since I downgraded my firewire enabler to 2.3.3, I will also try it later with 2.4 installed, as Mike Stats says it works for him..

Thanks to all,

Whaddayaknow, it worked for me, too. Removing all of the Sony garbage seems to be the solution. Things went great last night with several different runs of data and music. With VM ON I was able to do 4x re-burns repeatedly to a CD-RW. Time to pick up more media!

I'm going to drop a line to Mike at xlr8yourmac to thank him for saving a return trip for the Sony.
