Has anyone had problems installing and running this scanner with a G4? I have the newest driver 3.53 which came on the bundled CD. When I installed this software the computer began having memory problems (ram chip going from 128 to 64MB. My local dealer could not find anything wrong with the computer and in fact reinstalled OS to solve the problem. I reinstalled the scanner software (following the UMAX help page info) and had the same problem. I have e-mailed UMAX and have not gotten a reply.

Please be gentle, I am a new MAC owner.

Yikes ! I've never heard of something quite like this. First of all, go to your UMAX VistaScan DA file/application. Select it, and do a get info (command/"Apple" key plus the i key).
Click on the General Information banner, and drag down to Memory. You can set the memory allocation here - but before you change anything, check what it's set to. Does this explain your disappearing memory ? If not, UMAX has a really serious problem with their software...
I am successfully using a UMAX Astra2000U (with the Control-Strip item disabled, as suggested here at MacNN)

I've been trying to connect a 2200us to a Performa 6115. When I try to launch VistaScan 3.53, or Photoshop, or Omnipage, I get a type '1010' error and the application aborts. Looking at the SCSI bus with Apple Profiler, it recognizes the scanner. Using CharisMac's Anubus, it also recognizes a scanner and the correct model. I've reloaded the software per the Tech notes on Umax's site. I've rerouted the SCSI cables to eliminate my external hard drive. Same error. My next step is to contact Umax support this weekend to get their side of the story.

try using MagicScan software also by Umax, for their upper-tier scanners, supposedly, but i use it with an old Umax Astra 610s and it works great. so what if it is not a 'supported configuration' according to Umax!

it is a far better package than is VistaScan.

search forums for more info and download link that i have posted re: Magicscan

I have a 2200 attached via scsi to a g3 266mt os 8.5.1.
after a few weeks of working ok, the scanner will on show white for its scans. doesnt matter what i scan, the image always turns up white.
Spoke to tech support a few weeks ago, they said the have heard of several problems (didnt say if i was the only on with this problem) he took my info, and i havent heard anything since
