i have a 6500 and an apple multiscan 17" monitor and a while ago the monitor randomly freaked out on me and went all crazy when i tried to set it to another resolution. the screen turned to like, well there is no way to explain it but it sorta looks like a tv that has a channel scrambled. not the same, but just to give you an idea.

I want to fix the problem, and i first suspected it was the monitor but now i figure its the video card. Does anyone know what could cause this? and if it is the video card, what is a cheap, decent video card i could put in the 6500. (Im not talking Voodoo5 here, just something that works)

thanks in advance.

maybe its 'cuz that you set the monitor refresh rate/resolution outside of what it can handle...my new 19" Philips looks weird if I use 75Hz refresh rate at 640*480 for games, but works with 85Hz refresh rate.

Anyway, cheap and good video card...a V3 3000 OEM with unsupported beta drivers from 3Dfx. That'll be for about US$100 (online) give take US$20. Or you can probably grab a V3 2000 for US$70ish from local retailer (OEM).
G4/450, T-bird 1.05GHz, iBook 500, iBook 233...4 different machines, 4 different OSes...(9, 2k, X.1, YDL2.2 respectively) PiA to maintain...

i dont think its a monitor setting outside of what the monitor supports. my monitor now ONLY supports 832x624, and anything else doesnt make it look weird, it makes it so i cant see anything but gibberish. i had to randomly click around for hours with the monitors control panel open hoping that i would get lucky and click on the right resolution...ugh. anyway, thanks for the voodoo3 advice, i'll prolly pick one up if i am sure that is the problem.
