hey all -
just picked up my new mp g4 with pro mouse. the mac is fine (a little unstable at the mo' - but i've just covered it in apps so you can't hold a grudge!) : the one sticking point is the damn mouse -

i was looking forward to apples first optical - but its crazy! the pointer will jump literally from the top right to the bottom left for no apparent reason.

i've tried different surfaces (mouse mat, magazine cover, wooden table top etc.), combinations of different textures (no texture (doh!), very varied textures etc. with no effecy.

anyone else had this problem?

aside from this, its a lovely machine (aside from its tendency to forget that vm should be on, which desktop pattern to remember and that i really, honestly DO want the control strip visible at all times... another story)

thanks in advance for help!

try the unplugging/replugging routine? i had this issue at first and for maybe a day after MWNY but it has completely cleared up... i do not know how or why it did clear up, but i love that mouse now

also note that on the bottom of the mouse there are three settings (-), (0), and (+) and you should experiment with them, (-) is where mine's set... and use a single-color surface

all things considered, for me this mouse is great... light, fast, just a great feel...

I've had exactly the same experience with my intelimouse explorer (optical mouse)
at first it was so erratic I thought it might actually broken, and then it just started to get better, it's fine now (the behavour of
this thing is nearly as confusing to me as the imaculate conception!)

It may just be your mouse pad. Some colors on mouse pads mess with the optics on those mice. I have an MS intellieye and it does not like reds, so I switched to a solid grey mouse pad and those problems went a way.

We were just a bunch of sawgie old men eating egg salad sandwitches in a card board box, playing tease the wild wolverine in a confind space.

Try turnin the speed of the mouse down a bit. I know my IntelliMouse gets very erratic if I crank it up too much.

thanks to all for your replies!

i'll try the lower speed setting and the new mouse pad.

weirdly, the problem seems to have lessened over the last few days - its still there, just not as bad...

does _anyone_ have any idea how this problem can semi-cure itself, over time, with no intervention?!

madness...

i posted a link to an Apple TIL article, which describes the technology employed in the pro mouse, several days ago but i can not remember which forum, do a search and see if you can find that post and read the Apple TIL article i posted link for as it may give you some clues to deduce why this happens... i have not thought of it, just was pleased it cleared up after the first day of use...

ah, never mind, here are those TIL's:

(edited for double post!)

wlonh - thanks for the TIL urls - i think it may be the speed of mouse control panel - which i've set to fastest... i'll slow it down and try again!

cheers all -

chrisford
