Been looking and reading up on firewire cd-rw drives for my Tibook...so far my choices are....

Lacie Pocket Drive CD-RW 8x ---$299 no tax - subtract $30 rebate
VST Smartdisk CD-RW 8x --- $234 plus tax
Ezquest Boa Firewire CD-RW 16x --- $189 no tax
Ezquest Boa Firewire CD-RW 24x --- $239 no tax

I like the portability and the fact that these drives look nice but some of the tradeoffs with the portability is the speed and the fact that some are bus powered helps also

what are your thoughts and experiences with these drives and recommendations for them...thanks in advance

We've had the best luck with the LaCie drives. Most of them use a Plextor drive inside, which is an excellent burner. I wouldn't touch an EzQuest with a ten foot pole; we used to sell them, and I own one. If I turn it off, the computer may not recognize it for several days, so it's been on for the last nine months! A buddy also owns one, and it's been in the shop twice for repairs. We both bought ours a little over a year ago.
Why is there always money for war, but none for education?

Which one did you decide on and why? I am deciding between the same two models.

Thanks!

I would never recommend buying any product, at least hardware, that had an "Easy" or "EZ" moniker. Just from my experience, these are usually cheap, poor quality brands, and there is nothing easy about them. The simplicity of a product's design should come from its use, rather than reflected in its name.

I'm trying to figure out which firwire CD-RW I should buy - I'm between the new QPS 32x drive coming out, the Formac 24x drive, or the LaCie. I've heard negative things about the QPS in the past, but they seem to really have improved. I guess I'll wait to see the reviews of the QPS before jumping in.

the lacie pocket can be had for $299 plus a $30 rebate at a lot of mac resellers like maczones.....

I actually heard pretty good reviews about the boa ezquest drives considering most cd-rw use the same mechanisms however I think I am going to go with the smartdisk because I like the form factor of the smartdisk cd-rw drive but the usb option for the lacie pocket drive is nice as a "universal" burner but its not too much of a concern for me..... so smartdisk seems to be the way to go for me but it seems like most reseller don't have it in stock at a low price...

I think the Lacie rebate expired at the end of October--that's when they dropped the price to $299.

Has anyone used the tdk firewire 16x? I haven't heard anything about it, but it seems to be fast and reliable. I haven't seen tdk mentioned at all on the board I know it's supported in OS 9.

There are reports posted about this drive in the drive compatibility database over @ XLR8 Your Mac (there's always a link from the MacSurfer page). If you're looking for a drive (inc. CDRW) it a great place the 411.

I have an EZQuest 16x10x40 that works o.k. with Toast, but it just doesn't seem to ever want to work with Retrospect. No problems otherwise.
