I suggest you get the latest scan drivers for your scanner. I have a MicrotekE6 scanner that works without a problem.

I only use the plugin for photoshop and not their weird 'chooser' type scanning options. I don't even know if that was a part of the normal install for their latest drivers.

I've successfully run it on an 8500w/G3 upgrade running the latest MacOS9.

I'm not sure this will help you, but still...
I had a Microtek ScanMaker 3600 connected to a G4/400 and of course the OS9. Since the beginning, it wouldn't work. It might, ocasionally, only with the first pre-scan and then the scanner head would remain stuck to the end trying to push forward instead of returning to the beginning and doing the scan. Other then that, software seemed to be fine and the scanner would get recognised by it immediately etc. I was thinking of returning it back (which was a hassle since I live in Central America), but then I discovered that the scanner works perfectly on a G3/OS 8.6...Then I tried it on a new slot loading iMac with the latest OS9 and there again had no problem at all! I figured it must be a hardware/ software combination with the G4 and was patiently waiting for an driver update, but the Microtek site hasn't got even the drivers shipped with the scanner posted, let alone newer version. Also, it's been known that they have the tech support from hell, so all the e-mails and calls never provided any help. So I bought me an Agfa SnapScan e50 and am very happy with it.
Good luck...

Hello, I have a Microtek E3 scanner that worked just fine on our Performa 631CD, I bought an iMac 350 and wanted to use it with my new computer so I also got a Microtech USB to SCSI cable. The program crashes my computer every time I try to load it. I have tried emailing Microtek customer support about 6 times now but they just will not write me back. The software does find my scanner, I know that much. Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks, Shane

Did I ever have the same dilema that you had. My office uses only iMacs and G3/G4s for servers. I am the lone IT guy. We had a MicroTek Slim Scan C3 and when I upgraded the machine it was using to OS 9, it never worked again. I called MicroTek about 50 times and each time a different tech had me do something different. I downloaded the latest drivers, they sent me the drivers on CD, etc etc. Nothing worked. I finally gave up and bought a different scanner which works perfectly.

it is exactly whats happening to me...the slimscan worked fine on G3 but on G4 the scanner head just stuck....
its not a big deal rreally...i mean i can still use the G3 to scan...but to think that either Microtek or Apple are not doing their job to satisfies the customers.....
