What is going to be the main type of output? If it's photographic, the New Epson 870 (that replaces the 750)or 1270 are THE machines. The hexachrome approach works really well. If you have Photoshop, there's an excellent test image in the Goodies:Calibration folder. If you stick it on a Zip and bring it with you to a store you can make an objective analysis!
I'm an Epson 750 user and I find it excellent. I am less bothered by the "supposed" level of ink consumption. Sorry folks but quality does have a price, sometimes.
I am planning to buy the 1270 for the larger output, not so much for bigger prints but for same size prints with a nice broad border for framing. (You're not supposed to window-mount photographs!).
Good luck.
