Well, as you can see (from the system specs that i left below my post), i have an iBook. I also managed to purchase an external firewire case which converts a normal IDE hd into firewire and then gets plugged into my iBook. Unfortunately, the damn thing has an on/off button on the front of the case. This presents some problems which i'd like to get around if possible...

1) I can't seem to find the right way to put the damn hd away. Obviously it has to be turned off when i'm not using the computer, but i guess from not putting it away and forgetting when i put the iBook to sleep, it won't copy anything onto the drive anymore. I placed all of my MP3's on it, which iTunes agrees and still plays with, but i can't copy anything else like music, games, or pretty much ANYTHING! It says that there's an error and that the disk needs to be repaired. WHAT DID I DO AND WHAT CAN I DO TO NEVER MAKE IT HAPPEN AGAIN?! I want to make me and my drive happy, but it seems useless. Should i just remember to trash it before i sleep and turn of the comp, or is there something else i can do? By the way, when i do put the iBook to sleep it comes up with a warning when i wake it back up saying that a firewire device was disconnected or not shut down properly. SO what's up?!
Specs:12" PowerBook-1.33GHz, 768 PC2700, Airport Express, Panther (10.3.9), iSight, 15GB 3G iPod

Frumpy -
I can't say as this will be any help or not, as I am running OS 9.2.1 on an iMac DV 400. However...
1 - Power up iBook.
2 - Power up external firewire HD, and wait 30 sec.
3 - Plug firewire HD into iBook.
Icon of HD should appear and HD should be accessible at this point.
To put away:
1 - Drag HD icon to trash.
2 - Unplug HD from iBook.
3 - Turn off HD.
Never turn off HD if connected to iBook.
Never disconnect HD if HD icon is on the desktop.
I also would not advise using sleep function with HD attached. A nice feature of an external hard drive is that you can keep it off and unattached when not in use. This way it will be totally unaffected by anything that may happen to the main hard drive. Good luck.
