Hello,
I am assisting our college newspaper staff. Their old Unity 1800 printer, which is used for proofing newspaper copy, is starting to die. The area service bureaus only have the capability to print at 85 LPI. Anything higher causes problems with dot-gain. I looked at a newer HP printer, but the minimum LPI that the HP's are capable of is 125. Too bad the service bureaus in this area are behind on technology.

Does anyone know of a printer capable of 85 LPI? It must be able to be networked and have Mac drivers. Any assistance or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Dean,

I'm not sure what you're asking...What kind of printer you're looking for. What software are you using to print (Word? XPress? PageMaker?)

I have an HP LaserJet 4000 (the 4050 is the newer model, mine's a year old). When printing from XPress I can print:

300dpi at 53, 60, or 106 lpi
600dpi at 71, 85, or 106 lpi (there's the magic 85 lpi)
1200dpi at 141 or 180 lpi.

Those are the default settings; the box will accept any number you type in, however, so you could probably change it.

The "N" version of this printer is available with a network card, is Windows and Mac compatible, and has Macintosh drivers...it also has the options of additional paper trays and a duplexing unit. It's not 11x17, though. Is that a problem?

It's going to run you $1300 to $1500 with network card installed.

Hope this helps.

Linda
