Is it possible to buy a B&W laser printer that is compatible with a
non-usb macintosh running 8.1. All i can find is usb equipped printers or
ones that cost near $1000. Even a used printer would be fine as long as it
is compatible and works fine. Any ideas on where to shop?

If your computer has any free PCI slots, you could go out and by a USB card (which would probably give you two ports), and plug any cheap USB printer into that. And the card itself is not exoensive, either (I think it's under $60, though I'm not sure).
Be happy.

Nope no USB ports, it's an all-in-one configuration.

Try ebay... serial printers are hard to come by, indeed. BTW - use the edit button (the paper and pencil) to add to a previous post, or change it for that matter.

Check out your local thrift stores. I found a working LaserWriter for $30 at one such store. It had a full toner cartridge, LocalTalk cables and adaptors, and, according to the test page, had only been used to print 19,000 pages. It's slow but it works great for text documents that contain only one or two fonts.

There are any number of quality used Apple printers still out there in service, and for sale in the used market.

If you want a good serial printer, look for the II series (except the IISC - it's SCSI only). The IINT, IINTX and IIF are all good serial printers.

If you want/need a Ethernet laserprinter, check out the IIG, and LaserWriter Pro series.

Most of these printers can be found for a few hundread dollars. download the GURU program from Newertech.com to get the technical details for all Apple laserprinters.

The Personal Laserwriter 300s are good machines, but it's hard to take one to a USB- only CPU later on. They use the same cartridge as an HP 4ML.

Best deal I've seen ANYWHERE on older lasers is at www.refurbmadness.com . I saw them on DealNN a few days ago. They specialize in refurb educational stuff, but those old Laserwriter engines are built to last. My HPII with Postscript card is still going, and it was bought in 87 or 88 -- same mechanism, except Apple made the hookup much easier. I think they had LW for as low as $49.

I just checked again, and they start at $99. You may find them as cheap or cheaper elsewhere if you look, especially from folks that deal with surplus.

In my area, the state has a surplus depot where you can get IInts for as low as $20 sometimes.

If you are more interested in getting a modern printer, then buy an ethernet adapter for your Comm Slot (it might have a modem in it that you'll have to take out) and a printer with ethernet built-in or with a add-in card, or a print server.

When it's time to upgrade to a new Mac, your printer will work just fine with it then.
