Ok, anyone else curious about this? I ordered my iPod immediately after the store went back on line. At the time, the shipping time said 3-4 weeks. It's been 2 weeks and it's still saying the exact same thing...Anyone heard anything new about shipping dates?

i too have noticed this curious time info. i called to order mine on Friday and asked the guy what the 3-4 weeks is all about and he said that "the first batch has alsready sold" and thats why the delay. when i told him that the site has said 3-4 weeks since day one, he just seemed confused so i let the poor guy off the hook.

BUT something is definitely going on here and it stinks! i wish apple would just let us know what is up. are iPods in general delayed until later in the month, or just orders through the apple store? anyway, if i can find one on the 10th, guess who is going to cancel their apple store order? yep.

anyone have some real info on this? i've got a day with 8 hours in the air on the 19th, and it would be nice to keep the iBook folded away and leave my tray table up for once, you know?

(what a spoiled bastard i am)

I tend to agree with the issue that if I find one retail I'm going to cancel my Apple store order. The question is, what constitutes a "retail" store...does that mean Apple Stores only, or is that CompUSA, and others that sell Apple stuff...Apparently, Outpost has an order in for 500 units from Apple...

I ordered mine right after the keynote, am an "online ADC member"(free) and my order status still shows "being assembled"
Hopefully that will change to "shipped" this week.

My order on the UK Apple Store says Being Assembled, the order was placed on 28th Oct.

I suspect though that there will be a delay to deliveries caused by the OS X iTunes 2 installer problem. If they have already produced CD's with the iTunes 2 software and it uses the OS X installer that caused the data loss, they will have to destroy them and make new copies using 2.0.1.

As new update was only released by Apple on the 4th Nov, I suspect that iPods will be delayed until the new CD is available.

Hopefully it will still fit in with the 3 week delay I was quoted when I ordered my iPod.

Does anyone else get the feeling these things are flying out the door just
as fast as they can make them, and they're making as many as they can?

Read more of the responses, demand is still pretty good. Apple itself is expecting to be able to sell 600,000 of them per year.

Placed my order the 29th. Mine shipped today, 11/5/01. Technically it shipped yesterday with all that international date line stuff. I'm also an ADC member and bought mine through the ADC store for $319.

Anyone have a link to the ADC store so that I can take a look? I assume you need to enter a id/pass to buy anything.

Apple Developer store link: http://developer.apple.com/membership/usa.html .

Click on the link for the store at the bottomish...

Yeah... you need a hardware credit to buy anything. The prices rock though.

I called the Apple Store UK to ask about the delivery date for my iPod.
It was ordered on the 29th October, and they are predicting a delivery date of early December. I think that is terrible to be honest. Loooks to me that Apple announced a product too early again, before they had produced enough to meet initial demand. I don't suppose it could have been annouced on that date, to spoil someone else's software news ?

Come on Apple get your act together, according to the Apple store, my iPod is being assembled for the next 4 weeks !!!!

The ones who were complaining were kids with no money and were trying
to figure out how they could justify $400 to their parents.

The ones who didn't say anything were busy buying them.

I bought one, my wife bought one, my sister-in-law bought one
and it seems that many of us purchased one without commenting
too much about it.

I shouldn't even mention in it, but for the price of iPods I get nagging rights...

I have now found about six people who ordered later than me, and paid less than me, but their iPods are shipping and mine aren't. Doesn't that seem strange to anyone else?

I understand getting certain things out to developers fast, but since their isn't even an SDK for the iPod I don't see why people who paid full price with overnight should get theirs shipped out later than developers who get a discount and ordered later.

Ok, so some of this is just sour grapes from not ordering through ADC at the beginning. But hey, I feel better now.

Does anyone have the full story? How many ADC shipments are they completing before the general ones? Are they holding all general shipments until their "release date"?

I think its important to note that the Developer orders are handled out of Austin, and not the AppleStore proper.

Im fairly certain that its a totally separate operation.

Ahh that makes sense!

Ever since they put up the same looking Apple store front I was thinking they might have merged the back end too. But now that I think about it, both stores even give different phone numbers to call, so they are really separate divisions.

My current theory is the primary Apple store is going to stick to the release date (like they are having retailers do) and the developer one doesn't need to worry about that since developers always get things early anyway. Can anyone dispute/back that one up?

Got an email at excatly 6:55am letting me know it has shipped. I ordered it on 10/24 from Apple store.

Crappy thing is I choose 2-Day delivery, and I am leaving for a trip tomorrow night, and it will be delivered Friday. If I had choose overnight then I would have it for my 5 hour car ride.........Newman

Ordered mine about 15-20 min after details from announcement on the 24th, thru the regular Apple store.
Apple says it shipped, 2-day, but haven't been able to locate with the tracking number yet.

I ordered mine from the Apple Store about a half hour after they were announced on the 23rd...and mine's still being assembled.

Maddening. Should've learned from a similar situation with the iBook last April that it doesn't pay to order immediately.

Have faith...I just got an e-mail that my iPod went out today! Woo hoo...curious, I think Apple is playing the upgrade game again with the shipping options. I selected the basic ground shipping but got a FedEx number! *joy* Check your e-mails, the first batch should be going out today!

Apple needs to fix it's order system. I ordered mine asap (online) after the keynote and it has not shipped. I did the same for 10.1(by phone) only to find that others who ordered later (even through the mail) and did not pay for express shipping received their copy a week and a half before me. Maybe Steve would feel I'm being petty and should get a life, but if it wasn't for enthusiasts like me, where would Apple be? All I want is to feel like the orders are shipped in the order they are received. Instead, I always feel like I'm the one being screwed.

I'm with you, murk. I ordered mine on the 23rd while the keynote was still going on, and mine is still 'Being Assembled.' At the time, Nov 10 seemed so far away that I ordered ground shipping. But now, every day is an agonizing wait.

Why can't Apple implement a simple queue? It seems grossly unfair.

Ordered mine on Oct 23, day of the announcement. Right after actually. Anyway, got an email with tracking number today (Nov 7) that it shipped from Tiawan headed to Alaska via Fed Ex. I chose two day ship and expect it on Friday.

Doh!

I thought this was just an inconsistency between ADC and regular orders, but I guess it is true that the Apple store does NOT ship first come, first serve?

How else can they possibly do it? What decides if one order goes out before another? Is it completely random?

*sigh* I had ordered it with overnight shipping in hopes it would be here before my trip this weekend. If it shipped today, it would have been perfect. Oh well. I'll hold out hope that they'll run another shipment later in the day (not likely I guess).

For those of you that have ordered early / been shipped late in the past- does calling and ranting or *gulp* even asking nicely help at all? Or do they really not have any control over shipping at the end of the day...?

Same here - I ordered mine about 30 seconds after the web Apple Store came back online. As of this morning I have the same notice as you (I surely hope I don't have to go to Alaska to pick it up

So Friday looks like the day of arrival. I was a bit pissed they were sending out the ADC ones before mine but then those guys do pay hundreds or thousands of dollars for that particular 'perk'. Probably the way the world has always worked its just now in the Information Age we just know it.

***Check out my new post in the forum titled "New iPod Shipping Information." It seems our new toys are coming from overseas!!!***

I think Apple has different fulfillment centers. 3rd party groups that do the shipping for them. I think you're assigned a fulfillment center based on where the item is being shipped to. The capacity of the fulfillment center will drive how soon you get your order...I doubt very highly there's a single point of shipment.

I'm beginning to wonder if they ship stuff to you according to how new your computer is. My G4 must be getting a little long in the Sawtooth! Anyway, I won't be getting mad unless my iPod still hasn't shipped by next week. If I get the same treatment I got on the 10.1 update, it'll be December. Everyone is getting FedEx? I'll never pay extra again. I did it for 10.0 and everyone else got it free. I did it again for 10.1 and everyone else got it earlier. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me three times, well, I guess it takes three times with me. Please no more stories about how you ordered several days after the announcement and Steve Jobs hand delivered it via the Gulfstream jet.

I'm looking forward to the G5. Faster everything, and maybe even my shipping times will be improved!

NOOOOO! Mine was going to ship today, but I had no money in my debit card, since another company took it all away. NOooooooo.

Anyone want to buy a Cannon Xl, (I think thats the model)? I should have it sat, and I'm selling it cheap. I'm getting it from my friend, and it is in fairly good condition - I will let you know of any problems before you buy it. Must pay through Paypal, and it is sold for $1000.

Thanks,

Karl

How did you find that out? Did you get an email/check your order status on the site/or call Apple?

Or was it simply after checking your bank balance?

Just curious so some of us can know if we share the same fate. I know there's plenty of room on the charge account I used, but I had assumed Apple would mention any problems they might have in billing.

Well I phoned up to see what kind of response I'd get from the Apple Store person, and it was exactly like I expected (unfortunately.)

"My order # is X, could you tell me how its doing."

"Sure. Just a sec. [...] Yeah it seems fine."

"If it is fine, how come people who ordered days later than me have theirs shipped, and I even paid for the most expensive shipping option you offered?"

"I can't comment on other people's orders."

"So the first people to order are not the first to ship?"

"We told you the lead time is 3-4 weeks, we are gonna honor that. That was the only thing we told you."

"True, but isn't it kind of silly to not ship the first orders first?"

"[....] Sorry I can't help you any more. Yours should ship out soon."

"Well, thanks." [click]

*sigh*

Oh you lucky sons of guns... I want mine. Maybe the Apple Canada Store is just slower or not a priority for Apple. Canadian customers? Is Apple as fast to ship here than in the US?

I used the paypal debit/credit card to buy it, and Apple said they won't charge you untill it ships, and at around 5pm EST they tried charging me for it. Call you cc comapny and ask if $400 or whatever has been charged to it.
