Does anyone have the 17" Studio Display and have a thin horizontal line across your screen? Mine came with the g4 and I didn't have this at first, or at least I didn't notice it but I have this faint line across the screen. It's faint that it's barely noticeable but always wondered what it is when I see it. I read an article or a review that Studio Displays and Sony monitors have this unsual line... anyone?

It's supposed to be there. All Diamondtron (and Trinitron) displays have that line. In fact, large displays have two horizontal lines.

really? well why are they "suppose to have" those lines? why can't it be just no lines and pure graphics? the lines seem abnormal... don't really care though... the monitors great!!!

According to Macworld Mac Secrets by David Pogue and Joseph Schorr:

"The design includes a wire inside the picture tube to stabilize the colormask grid (an array of vertical wires that helps the electron beam strike only the correct spots on the phosphor). Despite this shade effect, says Apple, there's no better monitor technology."

I got this info from my sony manual:
They are called damper wires.
The lines you may be seeing on your screen are normal for the Trinitron monitor. These are shadows from the damper wires that stabilize the aperture grille, and are most noticeable when the screen’s background is light (usually white).
The aperture grille is the essential element that makes a Trinitron picture tube unique by allowing more light to reach the screen, resulting in a brighter, more detailed picture.

Apple actually offically recommends to whap the monitor on the side, not very hard, just hard enough to get the wire to come off the screen.

doesn't work... is it just a simple tap on the side? it'll be cool if i could get ride of it... actually i'm using a desktop picture with bunch of horizontal lines so it's hard to see em anymore.

Don't beat up your monitor trying to get rid of the aperture grille support wire shadow or you may damage the whole grille system! These damper wires are supposed to be there. Hopefully, you'll learn to just ignore them; after all they are (or should be) pretty faint. The recommendation to tap the monitor is on the chance you have a misalignment and you start to see evidence of a vertical shadow as well. Take care. Don't overdo it.

Noooo!

Only whack the monitor if two wires have become intertwined (creating a weird vertical line) and need to be released! There is no way to make the damper wires disappear!

tooki, whose Diamond Pro 900u has two damper wires
