If I"m copying one hard drive external to another. and the source is FW 400 to the computer, but the target is FW 800 to the computer, is the data going at 800? or do they both have to be connected 800 to the computer, which means I need to get an $80 hub. thanks.

This has nothing to do with Mac OS X. Please post in the correct forum.

Even though the computer could send data to the destination at 800 speeds, it can only get data from the source at 400 speeds. The computer cannot send data it doesn't have yet, so it can only copy from source to destination at the speed of the slowest device: in this case, 400.

so that's it Millennium thanks. you need to have 2 800 ports. Boy wish Apple had thought of that. and Belkin makes a three port FW 800 which is a joke. Anyone know a reputable 6 port FW hub? thanks.

Why don't you daisy-chain your drives? FireWire does not work like USB. My external HD and my DVD burner both have two firewire ports, so I can conveniently plug in all firewire devices I used to have at once (my 2nd gen iPod died some time ago).

But it will be writing at FW800 speeds which will result in a faster copy.
