Can anybody recommend small footprint CRT monitors? I'd like an LCD but they're just too expensive, and don't offer the resolutions I'm looking for at a decent price (1280 instead of 1024). I'm be looking at a 17inch monitor - currently I have a 17 inch behemoth of a monitor and need some space. How much of a difference are we talking with these smaller CRTs, and would it be worthwhile? Would the low end Samsung LCDs be a good alternative (I'd have to give up on the 1280 res issue, but perhaps I could do that).

It is going to virtually imposable to find a smallfoot print CRT because of the electron gun, the tube, needs the deepth to give you that high resolution that you want. If you are that concerned with space get a bigger desk and you will save a lot of money.

I GOT WASTED WITH PHIL SHERRY!!!

While no CRT offers the same small footprint of an LCD, there are short neck CRTs made by companies such as View Sonic. However, I've heard that due to the shorter neck they tend to have alot of problems(focus ect). Something to look into though.

I checked out the specs of Viewsonics so-called short neck CRTs. For the 17in version, the space saving was 2cm. Not enough to dump my current monitor and buy a new one. Looks like LCDs are the way to go. I hear Sony is shipping (soon) a 16 inch LCD (so the exact size of a 17 inch CRT) which supports 1280x960. Maybe I'll wait.
