I am really thinking that i need to purchase an external drive to basically hold all my mp3 collection. I was thinking if i get this drive i have to transfer almost 10 gigs of mp3s off my PC to use on my PM G4.. The problem is wont the drive be formatted under FAT32 or NTFS with winblows and when i want to connect to the G4 i will have to reconnect it and format as the HFS file system for the mac? Is this correct or is there a similar way to do this?

Your mac will recognize it as a PC formatted disk - if you format HFS you won't be able to use it on your PC without additional application (can't remember the name, but it might be MacDrive). So just format it for PC, and it'll still work fine on your Mac. Don't know about running apps off of it, though; I imagine this is not possible?

I did the same thing with an HFS+ formatted drive a while ago and it worked brilliantly. I FTP'd all my music across from my PC to one of the Maxtor 80GB FW drives, and for two months all was well. Then the whole drive died on me. That'll teach me to back up. Losing 60GB of music and photos was a bit of a bummer.
I'm interested in getting another drive and doing the same again, but I want to be able to share it with PCs and Linux machines. I understand that if I format it as a UFS partition under OS X it'll be recognisable by the Linux machines but not the PCs. Does anyone know if this is the case? If anyone's sure that leaving it as a FAT drive would work fine then I'll go that way instead.

Oi! That doesn't bode well for me. I recently bought a Maxtor 80 GB external HD that I use for my MP3s and videos. Do you have any idea why it died?
