I'm on an iMac DV 400mhz running 8.6.
I have a Que! Fire 8x4x32x drive which I got the other day for my
birthday (Thanks parents! )

Anyway I have yet to have a CD that has burnt correctly and am not
entirely sure why. I have tried tweaking several variables: used
several brands of media, different speeds of recording, more RAM.
Yet I always get a verification error before sector 30 on the CD.
Some of the CDs I have burnt work reasonably well but there are
always a few files on the CD that are damaged.

Is there anything else I can try.. I am really starting to get quite
frustrated. Is it possible that the problem is linked to damaged
files on my hard disk ( I have 35,119 crosslinked files amongst other problems ) . I am having problems at the moment hence why I bought the CDRW to backup so I can reformat. If the files on the
hard disk are damaged does this mean that verification will fail?

In addition... it doesn't work with direct copying from a CD either. Could this be the HD again causing problems or does this point more to the drive? Audio CDs crackle a lot.. same when I burnt mp3s onto a CD. They played but had lots of interference.

The error I get is -199 when trying to open a file from a botched CD.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Neil Inglis

Did you up the RAM in the Finder or in the application itself (the RAM cache). In Toast 4.1.3, when I had this problem with my BRAND NEW Pismo 400, I upped the RAM cache and then it worked fine.

Also, until you fix this, backing up might not work to restore your files.

Have you checked to make sure that there isn't an update to the software you're using? It might be the burning software, or the Firewire extension that the burning software is using with OS 8.6. Finally, if it didn't come with Toast, get Toast Deluxe and that might fix the problem all by itself.

He can be fixed -- you can't.

I tried both.. neither seemed to work.

I'll check for updates... I've tried the burning with Toast 5 and Toast 1.4.2

For what it's worth!
Ihad a 6500/G3-L2 300/96 Mb RAM/OS 8.6. On it I had Toast 3.5.7 and an external Yamaha 6x4x16. Imade a lot of coasters until I created a disk image and copied everything to it before burning...even then most data disks failed to verity.

Then (In March) I bought a G4/466/512 Mb RAM and the required OS 9.1...I also purchased Toast 5 Titanium and an Adaptec 2930 SCSI card. The G4 came with a CD-RW internal burner, so I had the option of using either burner...I usually use the internal since it's a little faster.

Bottom line: Ihave yet to make a coaster and have used Imation and Fujifilm CD's, nor have I had a data CD fail to verify. I suspect OS 8.6 was partly to blame...maybe Toast Titanium is the explanation, or the G4. All I know is I can now pull audio files or data files from anywhere, burn at max speed and get a good CD every time.

Food for thought.

Matt
